Guided Reading Packs with teacher's notes.
Guided Reading was introduced by the National Literacy Strategy in 1998 to help teachers to manage and assess children's reading progress more effectively.
Classes are divided into small groups of up to six children, grouped by reading ability. This means that the teacher can take one group a day in a Guided Reading session and follow the progress of every child in a class during a week. The rest of the class does other activities, often supervised by a teaching assistant, while the teacher takes the guided reading group.
Guided Reading sessions follow a set format:
* Introduction to the text
* A "walkthrough" (overview and warm up)
* Strategy check
* Independent reading (during which children's reading is monitored)
* Return to the text (group discussion of key topics and strategies).
Usborne Guided Reading packs
Usborne has created USBORNE GUIDED READING PACKS - specifically aimed at teachers to support their classroom Guided Reading sessions.
Throughout 2008 Usborne is publishing a graded series of 12 Guided Reading packs - EXCLUSIVE to Usborne Books at Home.
Usborne Guided Reading packs are full-colour packs that contain six copies of a carefully chosen Usborne title which complements a particular level of the National Curriculum literacy framework, and FREE full colour teacher's notes - all for JUST £30!
What are the National Curriculum levels and how do the Usborne Guided Reading packs fit in?
The National Curriculum sets out attainment targets for key skills in each subject. In English the key skills are:
* Speaking and listening
* Reading
* Writing
Each target has a number of levels - these are the levels tested in SATs. The benchmark for Primary schools is for most Year 6 pupils to reach level 4 or above.
Most schools and local authorities further divide the levels into sub-levels; A, B and C (A being the highest), to make it easier to track a child's progress.
Usborne Guided Reading packs have identified one title from the Usborne range for each National Curriculum level from 1C to 4A.
Each pack develops both specific skills from the National Curriculum level criteria and general reading fluency and stamina, as well as highlighting cross-curricular links.
